Desire Lines: The User is King
Design is often prescriptive, but human behavior is organic. This section analyzes 'Desire Lines'—the dirt paths worn into grass where people actually walk—and compares the efficiency of 'Prescribed Design' vs. 'User-Centered Design'.
Have you ever seen a paved walkway with a 90-degree turn, but a worn dirt path cutting across the grass diagonally? That dirt path is a “desire line.”
It represents the path of least resistance. In the past, architects tried to block these with fences. Today, progressive institutions (like Ohio State University or Michigan State) wait to see where desire lines form in the snow or grass, and then pave them.
This is User Experience (UX) design in the physical world. Ignoring desire lines leads to frustration and damaged landscaping. Embracing them leads to organic, efficient design.
